Whether it’s
an anniversary, birthday, holiday, or simply because, if you’re planning a
romantic getaway weekend for your sweetheart, come celebrate in Lake Charles!
There’s plenty to do here, especially for two. Once you arrive, the magic of
southwest Louisiana will inspire you, but here are a few tips to get you
started.

Fine Dining – Lake Charles chefs know how to
cook and serve great food! There are too many excellent restaurants to list
them all here, but a few of my favorites include La Truffe Sauvage at 815 Bayou Pines West, Restaurant Calla at 1400 Market St., Ember Grille and Wine Bar at L’Auberge, Harlequin Steaks and Seafood at 501 W. College St., and Mazan’s Mediterranean Foods, 217 W.
College St., and Vic and Anthony's at Golden Nugget Lake Charles. Bon appétit!
Wine Tasting – Several local establishments offer
wine tasting. Try Heist Wine Bar or Pujo Street Café, on Ryan St. The Wine Store on Nelson Rd. and Hocus Pokus on Country Club Rd. also offer wine tastings.

Carriage Rides – What could be more romantic than a
ride in a mule-drawn carriage? J & R Carriage, located on Bord du Lac by the Lake Charles Civic Center, offers
lakefront tours along picturesque Shellbeach Dr. and through the historic
district of the city. Snuggle under a warm blanket, listen to the clip clop of
the mule’s hooves, and take in the sights of beautiful downtown Lake Charles.

Music – Lake Charles boasts a thriving
music scene. Take your honey out dancing! In the warmer months, outdoor
concerts abound. The casinos often bring
in celebrity performers. L’Auberge
Casino Resort hosts the popular summer outdoor concert series, Party By the
Pool. The city of Lake Charles sponsors an outdoor concert series called
Downtown at Sundown and the Arts and Humanities Council produces Live at the Lakefront. Luna Bar and Grill hosts a Jazz Brunch on Sundays. Numerous bars and
clubs offer bands playing all genres of music. A few of the more popular nightclubs
include Luna Live, Jack After Dark at L’Auberge, and My Place. For a coffee house vibe, check the schedule at Stellar Beans Coffee House. Lake
Charles is also home to a world class Symphony.

If you’re
wooing on a tight budget, Lake Charles will still make a positive impression.
There are plenty of free or reasonably-priced excursions in southwest
Louisiana. Weather permitting, pack a picnic, stroll along Bord du Lac or through Prien Lake Park, and watch the sunset.
Take a hike at Sam Houston Jones State Park. They also have charming cabins for your overnight stay. Cruise down
the Creole Nature Trail All-American Road to bird watch and look for alligators. There are also several museums in southwest Louisiana that are
either free or have reasonable admission fees.
With matters
of the heart, it’s not so much where you are but who you are with that matter
most. But lovely Lake Charles can certainly help!

When
you think of Southwest Louisiana chances are you immediately think of food,
music and culture. Beginning Friday, May 16, one of Lake Charles’ premiere
concert series, Downtown at Sundown, will kick off by Ryan and Broad Streets
featuring everything you love about a downtown street fair and party. The main
component of Downtown at Sundown is the music, so expect some of the best of
the best performing.
For
the first concert on Friday, May 16, Louisiana Express will get the crowd pumped
up with their dance music, classics from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.
Chris Flowers is golden with her saxophone and amazing vocals.
On Friday, May
23, City Heat, a local favorite, will perform a variety of feel good covers sure
to get you out your chair and dancing in the street. They are known for their
rhythm and blues and jazz and funk dance tunes.
Grammy nominated Roddie Romero
& the Hub City All Stars makes their return to Lake Charles on Friday, May
30 with their “Louisiana Roots” music encompassing Zydeco, Cajun and Americana.
Topping off the concert series Friday, June 6 is Boomerang, a band that brings
sizzling hot funk, classic rock and Top 40 hits.
Look forward to music talent in the 700 block of Ryan Street by Luna, and also the vendors, food and more. All beverage sales of Downtown at Sundown
will benefit the Literacy Council of Southwest Louisiana. They
ask that no pets or outside drinks be brought on site. Be sure to bring your
lawn chair. The event lasts from 6-9 p.m. If for any reason it rains, the event
will move inside the Lake Charles Civic Center.

"Before I Die" is a global public art project that invites the community to share their personal aspirations in a public space through non-destructive graffiti. The project, which started in New Orleans, will now be featured in SWLA in the heart of downtown Lake Charles. The public is encouraged to write what they hope to accomplish in their lifetime on the wall. The installation will officially open on Friday, September 27th. It is downtown’s first interactive art installation and will be displayed in Lake Charles on the west side of 505 Bazaar at 314 Broad Street.Longtime friends Charles Talen and Euric Fuselier, owner of 505 Bazaar, teamed up to bring this world recognized art installation to SWLA. Talen says "it's a fun way for people to reflect on what they want from their lives and draw inspiration from the dreams of others." They hope to keep the wall up as long as the community wants to enjoy it.
The Before I Die project started in New Orleans in 2011 by artist Candy Chang, after the death of a friend. It has been featured in cities all over the world, including, Madrid, Spain, Beijing, China and Lisbon Portugal. The Before I Die project has been in over 50 countries and in 20 different languages.
