emorial Day in Lake Charles offers several ways to pay honor to those who have fought for our freedoms. One way is to visit the Avenue of Flags at the Graceland/Orange Grove Cemetery.Casket Flags line the drive through the cemetery in honor of fallen men and women. These flags were donated just for this day and special memoriam. The flags will be on display from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Memorial Day. In addition to the memorial flags, the Avenue of Flags also features a history circle where replicas of eight previous United States flags are flown.

At the Veteran's War Memorial Park by the Lake Charles Civic Center, you can see a particularly heroic story of a soldier who paid the ultimate price to save others.

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. 1st Lt. Fournet, Infantry, distinguished himself in action while serving as rifle platoon leader of the 2d Platoon, Company B. While advancing uphill against fortified enemy positions in the A Shau Valley, the platoon encountered intense sniper fire, making movement very difficult. The right flank man suddenly discovered an enemy claymore mine covering the route of advance and shouted a warning to his comrades. Realizing that the enemy would also be alerted, 1st Lt. Fournet ordered his men to take cover and ran uphill toward the mine, drawing a sheath knife as he approached it. With complete disregard for his safety and realizing the imminent danger to members of his command, he used his body as a shield in front of the mine as he attempted to slash the control wires leading from the enemy positions to the mine. As he reached for the wire the mine was detonated, killing him instantly. Five men nearest the mine were slightly wounded, but 1st Lt. Fournet's heroic and unselfish act spared his men of serious injury or death. His gallantry and willing self-sacrifice are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the U.S. Army.

"Before I Die" is a global public art project that invites the community to share their personal aspirations in a public space through non-destructive graffiti. The project, which started in New Orleans, will now be featured in SWLA in the heart of downtown Lake Charles. The public is encouraged to write what they hope to accomplish in their lifetime on the wall. The installation will officially open on Friday, September 27th. It is downtown’s first interactive art installation and will be displayed in Lake Charles on the west side of 505 Bazaar at 314 Broad Street.Longtime friends Charles Talen and Euric Fuselier, owner of 505 Bazaar, teamed up to bring this world recognized art installation to SWLA. Talen says "it's a fun way for people to reflect on what they want from their lives and draw inspiration from the dreams of others." They hope to keep the wall up as long as the community wants to enjoy it.
The Before I Die project started in New Orleans in 2011 by artist Candy Chang, after the death of a friend. It has been featured in cities all over the world, including, Madrid, Spain, Beijing, China and Lisbon Portugal. The Before I Die project has been in over 50 countries and in 20 different languages.

Lake Charles / Southwest Louisiana is known for its amazing cuisine, and no cuisine is held on a higher pedestal to locals than Crawfish (aka- mudbugs or crawdads). Usually boiled in a large pot and liberally seasoned, it's not unusual to see a local go through at least 5 lbs of these delicious critters! So if you are ever in the area and find yourself with the privilege to eat crawfish, you better be prepared!

Down in Southwest Louisiana we like to spice the holidays up
a bit and put on a Cajun Christmas! We pack so many events in the season that
if they were toys, even Santa might find it difficult to fit all of them in his
magical bag!
We kick the season off early with the Kiwanis Christmas Arts & Crafts Show (Nov. 2-4)! Hundreds of expert artisans and crafters display and sell their products to many eager shoppers at the largest art and handicraft fair in Southwest Louisiana. This years’ featured artist is Dianne Christopher with the Picasseaux Art Studio from New Roads, LA. We then await arrival of the Big Man himself! Yes, SANTA! He
will be arriving early at the Prien Lake
Mall (Nov. 9) to greet all the good little girls and boys and personally
take their wish list! In addition to having Ole Saint Nick in person, Children
also get to share in the merriment with a story reading and music complemented with

Another
one of the shopping highlights of the holiday season is Mistletoe and Moss (Nov. 14-17). A yearly tradition that offers the
sights and sounds of festive holiday decorations and entertainment while
shopping for Christmas! This year’s market will feature 90 merchants from
around the country, showcasing apparel, gifts, and accessories for women, men,
and children, specialty foods and
